Easy health tips, quick tips for healthy living and old-sayings-that-must-be-true are all different ways that health myths and nutrition myths are packaged and “sold”. What’s shocking is that even with the amount and access to information, people still quote these non-truths and, even more worrying, believe them and follow them. These 20 health myths were compiled from different places, including the New York Times and Newsweek. How many of these were you convinced were actually true? How many people do you know who firmly believe them? Here we go…

  1. Giving up non-vegetarian food ensures weight loss and healthy living.
  2. Cold weather makes you sick.
  3. You lose most of your body heat through your head.
  4. Cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis.
  5. Sugar makes kids hyper.
  6. It’s okay to double dip.
  7. The 5-second rule for food on the floor works
  8. Acne is caused by not washing properly.
  9. All cholesterol is bad for you.
  10. Bananas are fattening.
  11. It’s okay to skip breakfast
  12. Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight.
  13. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
  14. A low-fat diet guarantees weight loss.
  15. Fresh fruits are always better than canned.
  16. Eating after 8pm causes weight gain.
  17. Cardio is better for weight than weigh training.
  18. The fitter/healthier you are, the less you sweat.
  19. Thin people are healthy.
  20. If you stop working out, muscle turns to fat.
